Who are We? Critical Roles and Responsibilities of DC 37 Local 1503

 

The Executive Board is the main decision-making body of the local union when regular union meetings are not taking place. The Board decides on all matters related to the goals and methods of the local union that are not specifically addressed in the union’s constitution or decided on by the members during a regular or special meeting. The Board meets when the President or a majority of its members call for a meeting. The Board reports its actions to the members at the next meeting. A majority of the Board members must be present to make decisions. The Board decides by majority vote whether to bring a grievance to arbitration.

 

As the custodian of our union’s history, the Recording Secretary is responsible for keeping a record of the proceedings of all membership meetings and all Executive Board meetings. The Recording Secretary also carries out the official correspondence of the local, unless directed otherwise by the Executive Board. This task ensures that our union’s communications are well-maintained. Additionally, the Recording Secretary will perform other duties as required by the Executive Board, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in serving the union.

 

The Building Organizer, a key player in our union, is instrumental in uniting workers. They identify potential union members and initiate contact. The focus on relationship-building is crucial; it fosters connections and instills trust among workers. The Building Organizer achieves this through one-on-one meetings, a personal and caring approach that empowers workers and bolsters their confidence in the union.They are also responsible for devising and executing plans for organizing campaigns. Moreover, they play a key role in educating workers about the advantages of union membership.

 

The Corresponding Secretary is responsible for maintaining accurate records of the membership roster, updating, deleting, and changing members’ health benefit plans and union services within our council or international union. Additionally, the Corresponding Secretary assists in filing benefit forms and performs other duties as required by the Executive Board. The role also involves managing communications for the organization.

 

The Delegate to DC 37 represents the local union, voting on leadership, assisting with elections, and addressing member concerns. They meet nine or ten evenings from 6 PM to 9 PM, focusing on sharing opinions, building connections, and keeping members informed about union news.

 

The four Chapter Vice Presidents will lead and join labor-management and collective bargaining committees with the city and museum on issues directly affecting museum employees in the work titles they were elected to represent. Three chapter vice presidents will be elected by members in each chapter’s covered work title, such as Security Titles, Maintainer Titles, and Technician Titles. One chapter Vice-President will be elected to represent the Cloisters membership by members at the Cloisters.

 

The Trustees must conduct an audit of the local’s finances at least twice a year and report the results to the membership.

 

The President is responsible for presiding over all meetings of the local union and the Executive Board. They are also required to be a member of all committees and to countersign all checks drawn against local funds. The President is responsible for appointing all standing committees and special committees of the local, subject to the approval of the Executive Board. Additionally, they are required to report periodically to the membership regarding the progress and standing of the local in relation to their official acts. As a result of this election, the President will serve as the local delegate to all conventions of the Federation during their term of office.

 

As the President’s right-hand person, the first Vice-President will help the President with their duties. If the President is not available, the first Vice-President will lead meetings and do all the President’s duties. This shows that they are ready to step in when needed. With the Executive Board’s approval, the first Vice-President may be allowed to co-sign checks for local funds instead of the President or Secretary-Treasurer. This shows that the Board trusts them with financial matters.

 

The Secretary-Treasurer, responsibilities include receiving and depositing all money received by the local union. Prepare and sign checks as needed, maintain accurate records of all financial transactions, and act as the custodian of the local union’s properties. Additionally, submit monthly operating statements to the membership and ensure all required financial reports are submitted in accordance with the International Union Constitution.
